Inspired by the remarkable efficiency of the human eye, event cameras represent a fundamental departure from conventional imaging technologies. Rather than capturing complete frames at fixed intervals, these neuromorphic sensors record only changes in a visual scene, enabling ultra-fast, low-power perception in environments where traditional cameras struggle. As demand grows for intelligent systems capable of operating in real-time and under challenging conditions, event-based vision is emerging as a transformative technology with applications spanning healthcare, robotics, transport, defence, and environmental monitoring.
This case study explores the development and real-world potential of event cameras through the work of NeuroWare and its research partners. Produced to support discussions at Evidence Week in Parliament (6–10 July 2026), the study highlights how UK-led innovation in neuromorphic engineering is translating cutting-edge research into practical solutions that can address societal and economic challenges. By showcasing both the scientific advances and policy relevance of this technology, the case study aims to inform policymakers, researchers and industry leaders about the opportunities presented by next-generation sensing systems.
